Bringing Safe, Sustainable Water to Rural Uganda

Clean Water for Life

In the rural villages of Uganda’s Masaka Diocese, something as basic as clean water remains painfully out of reach.

Families walk miles each day—often more than 8 kilometers—just to collect water that is frequently unsafe to drink. Children miss school. Mothers carry the burden. Preventable diseases spread. And yet, this is not a story without hope.

At Touching Hands Uganda, we are working alongside local Church leadership to change that reality—village by village, well by well.

The Need

Across Uganda, millions of people still lack access to safe water.

In the communities we serve:
– Families rely on contaminated water sources for drinking, cooking, and hygiene
– Children suffer from waterborne illnesses that keep them out of school
– Women and girls spend hours each day collecting water instead of pursuing education or income-generating work
– Schools operate without clean water, compromising sanitation and dignity

This is not just a water issue—it’s a health, education, and human dignity crisis.

Our Solution: Sustainable Water for 10 Villages

We are launching a comprehensive water initiative to serve 10 rural villages in the Masaka Diocese, providing clean, safe, and accessible water to:
– Over 9,000 community members
– More than 5,200 primary school children

What This Project Includes:
1. Deep Borehole Wells
– Drilling 10 deep boreholes (200 meters) in high-need villages
– Equipped with solar-powered pumps for long-term sustainability
– Designed to bring clean water within reach of every household

2. Solar-Powered Water Systems
– Grundfos solar pump technology
– Solar panel systems for reliable, off-grid operation
– Elevated storage tanks (5,000 liters each) for consistent supply

3. Community Water Access Points
– Safe, centralized collection points within each village
– Reducing travel time and physical burden, especially for women and children

4. Sanitation & Hygiene Training (CLTS Model)
Hands-on community education in:
– Handwashing and hygiene practices
– Safe food preparation
– Household sanitation improvements
– Empowering families to break cycles of disease

5. Local Ownership & Sustainability
– Formation of Water User Committees (WUCs) in each village
– Training in maintenance, governance, and financial accountability
– Ensuring each well remains operational for years to come
